Why linen and wool

Your face deserves better than synthetics

  • Breathes while you sleep

Turkish stonewashed linen moves moisture away from your skin, and the Wisewool™ core holds it inside the fiber without feeling damp. The result is a mask that doesn't go clammy on you at 3am.

  • A fit you set once, then forget

Twin elastic straps cradle the back of your head instead of squeezing it. No plastic buckles, no Velcro to catch your hair. A simple knot sets your exact tension.

  • You can actually wash it

Linen is one of the very few fibers that is stronger wet than dry, so this mask washes when most premium sleep masks are spot clean only. Cold water, gentle hands, dry flat in the shade.

How it's made

From the farm to your face

  • The farm

    The farm

Our wool comes from a select few farms across the Gisborne region, raised outdoors in one of the best wool climates in the world. Every batch is tested at an independent lab.

  • The wool

    The wool

Scoured at WoolWorks in Napier, tested by the New Zealand Wool Testing Authority with a nil-detected chemical and pesticide residue profile, then engineered by Wisewool™ into a resilient layer. No binders. No additives. Just wool.

  • The workroom

    The workroom

Every mask is cut and sewn by our team in Auckland. Making them ourselves is how we protect our quality, our people and our purpose.

The details

A classic sleep mask, done properly

Twenty five grams of Turkish linen and New Zealand wool. Nothing against your face that is not a natural fiber.

Stonewashed linen on the outside, a 200gsm needle-punched Wisewool™ core inside. Cut and sewn by hand in our Auckland workroom.

The twin elastic straps knot to any head shape, one above the ears and one below, so it stays put without needing to be tight. And you can wash it. Cold water, dry flat in the shade.

A cotton drawstring pouch comes along for the ride, whether that is to your bedside table or 30,000 feet.

Size and fit

Dimensions: 8.5in x 3.5in.

One size, temple to temple. The mask gives you temple-to-temple coverage without feeling like an oversized helmet. If you want maximum coverage and gentle even weight instead, our Weighted Eye Mask is 10in x 4in and almost half a pound.

Custom fit, just knot it. Heads come in all shapes and sizes, so we keep it simple and hardware-free. The twin-strap elastic ties to your exact comfort. Too loose? Tie a new knot where it feels right and snip off the excess.

The straps can be replaced. Most sleep masks become landfill the moment the elastic stretches out. Thanks to the side channel design, you can thread a fresh piece of elastic through the side seams whenever you need to.

Materials

Handcrafted in our Auckland workroom from local and imported materials:

  • Turkish stonewashed linen, independently tested for harmful substances. This is the layer against your skin.
  • 200gsm Wisewool™ needle-punched blanketing, New Zealand strong wool. This is the hidden core.
  • 300TC 100% cotton lining, sitting between the linen and the wool so no fibers work their way through.
  • Cotton and rubber elastic straps.

Questions, answered

How is this different from the Weighted Eye Mask?

195 grams of gentle, even weight against 25 grams of barely anything. The full comparison is further up this page. The short version: our Weighted Eye Mask blocks more light and can be warmed or cooled, and this one is lighter, washable, and better suited to people who move around at night.

Does it block 100% of the light?

No, and we are not going to promise it. Heads are different shapes, and a flat mask that seals perfectly on everyone does not exist. What it does is block light very well, and the twin-strap design lets you position and tension it to your own face rather than to an average one.

If the darkest possible result matters more to you than weight, the Weighted Eye Mask seals closer because the weight settles the edges against your face. And if this one is not working for you, you can return it within 30 nights for a full refund.

Will it fit me?

The mask is 8.5in x 3.5in and covers temple to temple. The twin elastic straps tie to any head size: knot them where they feel right and snip the excess. One strap sits above the ears and one below, which is what keeps it in place without needing to be tight.

If the elastic relaxes over time, re-tie the knot, or thread a fresh piece through the side channel.

Will my face get hot?

This is the question most people ask about a wool mask and it is a fair one. The wool is not against your face. It sits inside, behind a cotton lining, under a linen outer, and linen is one of the most breathable fabrics there is.

The wool core is hygroscopic, which means it takes up moisture from the small pocket of air against your skin and holds it inside the fiber without the fabric feeling damp. That is what stops a mask going clammy in the middle of the night.

Will it smell like a farm?

The wool layer is scoured at WoolWorks in Napier and sits inside a linen and cotton cover, so there is usually nothing to notice. Some people catch a faint natural wool scent on a new mask. It fades on its own, and airing the mask in the shade for a few hours before first use speeds that up.

Is this sleep mask suitable for sensitive skin?

The layer against your face is Turkish stonewashed linen, independently tested for harmful chemicals. That means every component has been tested against a list of harmful substances, under the stricter limits that apply to articles worn against the skin for hours at a time.

Can I wash it, and how?

Yes. Gentle hand wash in cold water with a delicate or wool-specific detergent, then dry flat in the shade. No machine, no tumble dryer, no bleach.

Those rules exist to protect the wool rather than the linen. Linen is one of the very few fibers that is stronger wet than dry. Wool is the opposite, and it felts if you combine heat with agitation.

Is it good for travel?

Compact, lightweight and durable, and it comes with its own cotton drawstring pouch, which makes it a good companion for flights, road trips and hotel stays.

You can hand wash it in a sink on the road. Give it time to dry flat rather than expecting it back in an hour.

The sleep mask is amazing! Super comfortable and is great at blocking the light out - which is great if you live in Te Waipounamu the South Island where it doesn't get dark till 10pm at night in summer!

Product instructions

Washing

Yes, you can wash it. Linen is one of the very few fibers that is stronger wet than dry. The wool core is the opposite, and it will felt if you combine heat with agitation. So the rules below exist to protect the wool, not the linen.

Gentle hand wash in cold water using a delicate or wool-specific detergent. No machine, no tumble dryer, no bleach. Dry flat in the shade, smoothing the mask out while it is still damp so it looks its best when dry. Low heat iron with a barrier cloth if you need to, 230°F maximum.

Between washes

Wool takes up odor compounds and holds them in the fiber rather than releasing them back into the air, which is why wool needs airing more than it needs washing. A few hours in the shade does more than you would think.

Storing it

Keep it loose in its pouch rather than folded along the same crease every night. Linen is strong, but it does not love being folded in the same place a thousand times.
