Friends don't let friends spend a third of their life on plastic.
Most pillows are filled with polyester or foam, both plastics made from oil. You'll spend about a third of your life with your face on one. Ours is filled with pure, clean Wisewool™, in a cotton cover, with nothing applied to the wool.

Nothing but wool
The fill is Wisewool™ knops: small, springy balls of New Zealand wool, graded to a tight range of thickness and length and washed to Wisewool™'s own strict specifications. Nothing is applied to it.

The cool side of the pillow
Synthetic pillow fills don't breathe, which can trap heat and sweat against your head. Wool pulls moisture off your skin, so you stay dry and comfortable whether you run warm or cold.

Support that holds
Wool is springy, so your head rests on it instead of sinking through it. Wisewool™ knops are softer than traditional wool fill and move like a filling, with no lumps. Air it out now and then, and add more fill if it needs it.

Unlike down this pillow doesnt loose volume as soon as you put your head on it.

The ability to adjust the firmness is fantastic as my husband and I are different widths in the shoulder so prefer different pillow heights.

What is Wisewool™?
In the hill country of Tairāwhiti Gisborne, more than 250 families raise sheep for strong wool, many on land their families have worked for generations.
Today 92% of New Zealand wool is processed overseas. Wisewool™, run by a family that has graded this region's wool since 1894, chose to keep the work at home. Every step, from shearing to scouring and twisting the wool into knops, happens on the North Island, keeping the last of the local industry working.
Because they never buy blended wool at auction, they control what goes in, so the wool comes out cleaner, more consistent and better performing. It's wool from sheep they know, made the old-fashioned way – no fillers, binders or chemical processing.
Every Wisewool™ batch can be traced back to the farm it grew on. Every farm is certified under the New Zealand Farm Assurance Programme, with independent audits of the flock's health and welfare.

Keep the spare wool.

What's inside
Handcrafted in our Auckland workroom:
- Fill: Wisewool™ knops, New Zealand strong wool, 36 to 39 micron. Nothing is applied to the wool: there's no antibacterial finish, biocide or flame retardant.
- Cover: 300 thread count 100% cotton from India, with a YKK zip.
- Deluxe cover: the Pillow Duvet, quilted 100% cotton with a 200 GSM layer of needle-punched Wisewool™ inside, in place of the plain cover, with a YKK zip.
Care
- Most of the time, it only needs airing. A few hours in the sun does more than a wash.
- The cover: unzip it, take the wool out, and machine wash the cover cold.
- The wool: don't machine wash it. If it needs more than airing, hand wash it gently in cold water with a wool detergent. Don't wring, agitate or tumble dry it.
- The quilted cover (Deluxe): take the wool out, then machine wash cold on a delicate or wool cycle with a wool detergent, in a front loader or a top loader without an agitator. Air dry, or tumble on no heat.
- To reset it: take the wool out, give it a shake and put it back. It evens out the fill and lets you set the height again.
- Good to know: you may spot the odd trace of grass or straw in the wool. It softens with use.

Frequently asked questions
What does a wool pillow feel like?
Medium to firm, and springy. Your head rests on it instead of sinking to the mattress, the way it can with down. Take wool out for a lower, softer pillow. The Deluxe's quilted cover makes it feel more even.
Is it too firm?
It arrives full on purpose, so it can feel firm on the first night. Most people take out a few handfuls and find their height within a few nights. If you'd rather not feel the knops at all, choose the Deluxe: its quilted wool cover smooths out the surface.
How much wool should I take out?
Start with a handful and try it again. Side sleepers usually keep the most, back sleepers less, and front sleepers the least. Your head should sit level with your spine when you're on your side.
Will it go flat?
Wool settles with use, like any filling. When it does, give it a shake, air it in the sun, or put some spare wool back. Taking the wool out and putting it back also resets it.
Is a wool pillow hot?
No. Wool takes up to 30% of its weight in moisture and gives it back to the air, so heat and damp don't build up under your head. Reviewers who switched from memory foam say it's cooler.
What are knops?
Small, springy balls of wool. Wisewool™ makes them from fiber graded to a tight range of thickness and length, so they're softer than traditional wool fill. They move like a filling, so you can shape the pillow and there are no lumps.
How does wool compare with down?
Down is softer and squashier, and it flattens as soon as you put your head on it. Wool is firmer and holds its height through the night, and it handles moisture better, so it stays cooler. There are no feathers to poke through the cover.
Why wool instead of polyester or memory foam?
Polyester and memory foam are both synthetic, made from oil. Polyester holds less than 1% of its weight in moisture, and foam molds around your head and holds heat. Wool takes up to 30% of its weight in moisture and gives it back to the air, so it stays cooler. It supports you, and you can change its height whenever you like.
Will it fit my pillowcase?
Yes. The Queen fits a standard Queen pillowcase (20 x 30 in) and the King fits a standard King (20 x 36 in).
How do I wash it?
Unzip the cover, take the wool out and machine wash the cover cold. Don't machine wash the wool. Air it in the sun, and if it needs more, hand wash it gently in cold water with a wool detergent. The Deluxe's quilted cover goes in the machine on a cold wool cycle once the wool is out.
Is it non toxic?
The fill is pure New Zealand wool with nothing applied: no antibacterial finish, biocide or flame retardant. Testing found no chemical or pesticide residue. The cover is 100% cotton.
What do I do with the spare wool?
Keep it in a spare pillowcase or a cotton bag, somewhere dry that breathes. When the fill settles, put some back.
Does it smell like wool?
When it's new, you might notice a faint, clean wool smell. A few hours of airing clears it. Nothing is applied to the wool, so there's no chemical smell.
Is it itchy?
The wool is inside a cotton cover, so what touches your face is cotton.
Is the wool organic?
It isn't certified organic. Less than 1% of New Zealand's wool is. Our wool can be traced to the farms in Gisborne where it grew, and it was tested by the New Zealand Wool Testing Authority alongside certified organic wool. Both came back the same: no chemical or pesticide residue detected.
Where does the wool come from, and is it ethical?
It's grown on more than 250 family farms in Tairāwhiti Gisborne, on New Zealand's East Coast. The farms work under New Zealand's strict animal welfare standards and are certified under the New Zealand Farm Assurance Programme. Our wool partner, Wisewool™, has graded wool from this region for five generations.
Can I add the Pillow Duvet later?
Yes. The Pillow Duvet is sold on its own and zips over the Classic, or over any pillow you already have.
